Overnight In Downtown Raleigh

Today we left Atlanta, headed back up North to our next housesit in Rye, NY. We had a slight change of plans this morning – unfortunately, poor Mollie has the flu, so we opted not to stay with Team Reed (miss you guys!!). Little known fact – it’s super easy to find last-minute Airbnbs, and a lot of times you can get a lower price for late bookings (unlike hotel rooms). We fired up the app while on the road, and chose a cool-looking historic home with a private suite just a few minutes from Downtown Raleigh.

The house is gorgeous, and the suite we’re in is huge and comfortable. Plus there’s a friendly kitty greeter outside, always a bonus.

We hated not having dinner with Team Reed. However, there was a silver lining. Raleigh is filled with amazing restaurants, and we got the chance to check out one of them: Brewery Bhavana. It’s pretty much everything we never even knew we wanted in a restaurant. Cool open space, a great bar, a book store (!!) and flower shop and huge trees inside the restaurant, and amazing Asian food with plenty of well-marked vegetarian options. And best of all, a cool name – Bhavana means cultivate in Sanskrit. Our waiter, Alan, was fantastic and very interested in our travels. We had a great time chatting with him about road trips. He’d like to recreate Che Guevara’s famous motorcycle trip from Argentina to Miami – we hope he gets to do it someday.

I’m sorry to say that we ate everything before we thought to take any photos, but here are a couple of the space (the view from our table!), plus our fortunes from the cookies they brought us at the end.

We can’t wait to go back there next time we’re in town, and also check out their sister Laotian restaurant!

  1. Hi Daria and Jim–Happy New Year! Diane told me you are in Rye now–would love to see you both again, either in NJ or Rye. Please keep me posted if we can get together before you’re “on the road again”!
